Hi Rich,

Thanks for kicking things off.

There isn't an induction day before you start at HP. (there is one once you start tho!) I only met two of the curent interns before I came to HP because they lived in Loughborough.

One option would be to try and organise everybody to meet up in Bristol then decide who you want to live with. Otherwise just risk it, thats what we all did and it worked out fine (No guarantees though!)

I'm here to give you advice on any part of moving to Bristol so can help answer your questions but HP don't organise any housing at all. It may seem a bit daunting but you'll be fine Very Happy
You can meet the other interns on here and discuss housing with them. we found it very useful.

Let me know if this doesnt answer your question and I'll try and help some more.

Hi everyone,

My name is Nathaly and I am in my second year studying Business Management at the University of Surrey.

I should start my placement at HP during the beginning of June. I am at the moment looking for accomodation, so if there is anyone else in the same situation, let me know.

Hi,

Yah i was thinking give it a few days and see who responds on this thread and is interested in sorting accomodation earlier rather than later. Then we could organise a pub lunch or something for the interns an maybe work out some accomodation.

Im going to be looking for some accomodation. I'll be driving so dont mind working out lifts or something but would want somewhere with off road parking (getting a bit sick of terraced housing in loughborough too)

Leo...n e recommendations on areas to live in / not live in?

Hi all,

We are still recruiting at the minute so there will be more people signing up in a week or so. There are also a few people already recruited not signed up yet so I'll give them a nudge. In total there will be about 14 or 15 interns next year.

Now with where to live...

HP is located in North Bristol but the city is towards the south. Traffic in Bristol is a complete pain so you need to decide whether you want to live near the city (Great for lots of nights out) or near HP (Great for getting up late and easy to get into work) or live between.

I have put a map there which shows you a map of Bristol. HP is shown by the green arrow. Where we decided to live is shown by the red circle (Great place to live but far from town) The Pink Circle is where some of the current interns live. Its slightly closer to town but means getting a bus in or riding.
Clifton shown in purple is very posh with nice houses but will probably be a bit too far to travel everyday.
The best compromise would be to live in Gloucester road (green circle) as it is full of pubs and shops all on one road. But parking can be a pig! For parking (Rich as you asked) North Bristol houses have a bit more space for parking but not impossible to park elsewhere.

Basically if you dont mind spending time travelling then for a great time live near town or Gloucester road. If you're a late sleeper live closer to HP. I thought I'd be happy to drive every day but when you see the traffic you'll realise what a bad idea that can be!

I hope this helps you guys, best bet would be to add me to MSN leo.knight@ntlworld.com and let me know what houses you've seen and I'll give you some info on the area.

HP's postcode is BS34 8QZ so you can check distances from work. Most the current interns live within 3 miles of work.

Let me know any queries and if this doesn't help at all. Just remember there will be a lot more people on here soon. There are more houses than students in Bristol so there's a lot of choice available.

Good places to look for houses are on the UWE noticeboard online (Seems you need to sign up this year, if you cant get on let me know and I'll call UWE and see if we can get on) or gumtree is also useful. Or of course estate agents and private landlords.

One of the current interns has a contact number / email address for her landlord who has a number of houses. I'll get hold of it and post it on here ASAP.

Take care all and keep me updated.

Hi all,

Just a quick update. I have emailed UWE (a uni next door to HP) to ask for info for you guys.

There are 2 uni's in Bristol, Bristol Uni and UWE (University of West of England) So if you see an advert saying "house is close to uni" make sure its the right uni! To make this more complicated UWE has 4 campuses, its Frenchay campus that is closest to HP. St Matts is much further away.

I have managed to get the phone number of one of the current interns landlord. Here is his number

Kevin Eddols - 07879612113

I've called him to let him know that some of you will call. He has a house for 4 maybe 5 available by the time you start at HP and possibly another house too within 100 yards so you could all live close together. If you'd like pictures just let me know and I'll try and get hold of some. Also If you'd like to view just give him a call. Say Leo gave you his number and that you are working for HP so he knows who you are (I've prompted him already)

I forgot to say a most of the houses in Bristol are on room let not house let meaning you can just take one room without signing for the whole house. Therefore you could all come and see houses seperately and just take a room if you like the house. If you let me know when you are coming to Bristol I could come and meet up with you and show you around.

Have fun

Hi everyone,

I'm Ben, also from Loughborough University, studying 2nd year comp. science. Rich - I remember you, you were sitting on the right of me doing that mad survivor problem solving thing. Remember me? :p Congrats on getting the job too!

Now then as far as housing stuff is concerned, I don't drive so would preferably like to be within reasonable walking distance (anything up to about 30mins walk i guess) so I'm thinking about the Filton area (Red or possibly pink circles on Leo's map). Does anyone else have preferences as to where they want to live at all?

I'd really like to try and get something sorted while we've got a break for easter, so do people fancy meeting up in Bristol sometime later this month? I'm going back to uni on the 21st/22nd April so if anyone wants to meet up any time before then that would be cool!

Yo Ben,

yeah i remember you also, congrats to you on the placement too. having a meet up in bristol this easter is definately a good idea. were u thinking a weekday or a weekend? I guess if we are to do as Leo suggested and get him to show us around we may be better off with a weekend...what suits you best Leo? I'll need a bit of notice for a weekday. as Leo said we should probably leave it a week or so as to get some other interns on board. Theres a bank holiday at some point this holiday isnt there? maybe then would be good......

Im not fussed on the location particularly. As i'll be driving an estate car it'll be a pain in the ass having to find road side parking if it's anything like the student triangle in lufbra. That was my only concern, its not guna be the end of the world if though if its the case. :-)

Hiya,

Any weekend after this one is good for me at the minute. Weekday would be ok too if you give me some notice. The bank Holiday weekend would be fine as long as its not Easter weekend (Weekend after next)

May be a good idea to have a short list of houses each that you would like to see.

Sorry to keep this so short but I am in training at the minute! I'll be back later to help with anything.

Hi All,

Just a quickie, Terry is Kevin Eddols brother. He gets kevin to do all the dealings for him normally.
This may sound obvious but whoever you speak to just make sure you say you're at HP so they can get you a house close to it. Filton area of Stoke Gifford would be ideal.

Hey everyone,

Right - who wants to meet up on the 14th/15th weekend of April? I can do pretty much any weekday too, just thought it would be much easier at the weekend, especially if Leo or any of the current interns wouldn't mind meeting up too?

Let's start by seeing who can make it, then we can agree a time and place to meet etc!

Yep sounds like a plan, i think the 14th would probably be better in terms of checking out houses. i would prefer the weekend anyways.

.........n e one else??? pub lunch maybe??? I culd probably pick people up from close train stations to wherever we end up of on my route (gloucester to bristol) if that makes life easier for people....

Hi everyone,

The 14th would be ok for me but would rather another weekend if enough people cant make that one. I can pick anybody up too if they need it (just in case Rich cant do it), just let me know.

Are you all up for meeting in a pub and going from there?

Just so you all know, unless you have made other arrangements, everybody will be starting on the 3rd of July.

It may be helpful if you can all find as many potential houses to look at as possible before you get here so you arent frantically looking on the 14th.

Let me know what you want to do and I'll make some plans.

Obviously next weekend's easter so that's out of the question really, and I'm going back to uni on the weekend of 21/22nd (as I think a few other people will be?) so the 14th/15th is the only good weekend for me. I may be able to come down to bristol at some point after easter, but I've got exams starting fairly soon I think, but I get my timetable pretty soon so I'll let you guys know when I get that.

Leo would you be able to provide us with any information regarding landlords or estate agents for us to look at on the net? Like you say, we really need to look at some places before going to bristol or it will be a bit of a mad dash lol. If you know of any at all that would be great!

Hi Ben,

There are 100's of estate agents in Bristol (unlike loughborough!) so best bet is to start calling some that offer student houses and they will usually pass you on to somebody who can help if they cant. There is a big company called student digs (or similar) here is there site.

http://www.bristoldigs.co.uk/default.asp I think a lot of there houses are a bit far from HP tho.

I'm still trying to get a reply from UWE (They only want to help UWE students ideally so comms are slow!)

14th is fine, just wasnt preferable. I'll look forward to seeing you all then.

I'll contact my buds who live in Bristol in the meantime and see who their landlords are.

I'll keep you updated.

Leo

PS is anyone else besides Rich and Ben coming down?

PostSubject: Re: Introductions   Tue Apr 03, 2007 9:09 am

I've got similar issues as ben with which weekend is good for me.

Havnt had much on today so did some research. The thing is cuz we're not starting till 3rd July any professionnal housing we look at this easter may well have (more than likely if its good) already let by the time we actually come to get a house.....least thats my understanding, its not like student accomodation where u get a house over 6 months in advance before you move in, or at least thats what lufbra is like. it appears the same is going on in bristol from this site and a few others.....

http://www.studylets.co.uk/uwe.asp

uwe being the relevant uni for us, if anything the main uni seems to have less available even now. so im assuming it is similar to the loughborough setup. im not sure that student accomodation is a good idea as if we end up working past 12 months (as martin and leo are) we will end up having to find professionnal housing for a period. maybe not an issue for me as i could commute from gloucester if necassary but a pain for anyone else?...

so if we meet up the best approach would probably be choose various houses in a few realistic areas and just get an idea of what our money will get us. houses tend to be of a similar type in areas especially if yur looking at a similar budget so we could probably get a good idea. then closer to starting at HP we could then get and find a house.

am i making sense or is it waffle? bens first post only appeared this morning so may take a little while to get some responses

Hey Guys

I'm Amine JAIDI doing AI at UWE. I will be starting my placement sometime in July. I am very interested in living somewhere near HP. I wouldn't want to live in Filthy Avenue though (Excuse my French). I have found this website northbristolstudentlets.co.uk and they've got some pretty nice houses next to the motorway not too far from HP, Sainsbury,...

I would be very happy to meet you guys the weekend after the 19th of April as i need to hand in my coursework at that date. Please feel free to add me to MSN aminejaidi@hotmail.com if you want to discuss anything i guess it will be easier and quicker than using the forum. Looking forward to meeting you guys.

Good news

I had a reply from UWE.

Dear Leo

You can access the Private Accommodation Search on our web-site by using the password 'house' but you will no longer be able to look at the notice board as it is now only accessible to UWE students and staff.

http://info.uwe.ac.uk/Landlords/ is the site it works on. The area you want is Frenchay.

Let me know if its any use. if not I'll get onto them for more help.

I start my placement in July (start - 2nd i think) and have not really any idea about accomodation. Has anyone sorted anything yet?

It seems a few people have arranged to meet already in Bristol but I haven't even thought that far ahead yet! any one with some info. can you please let me know

Hey guys,
my names Daryl Gent currently in my second year of Computer Science at the University of Kent Canterbury campus. i'll be taking Yvens job in the Technology solutions group. i was in the afternoon session on the 15th of Feb interview day.

Im going back to Canterbury tomorrow and its a 4+ hour 66 train ride to Bristol from there.. so thats going to a rather large pain for me.
but i dont mind where i live, so long as a good size.

Hi guys,

Hope you've all had a good easter weekend Very Happy

Isobel and Nathaly can you make the 14th? The plan is to meet at Parkway Station at 10am and we'll go to a pub or similar and plan what to go and see.

For the guys who can't make it, we'll organise another time soon.

Hey leo

I just been looking at your information you been providing such as the websites links for accommodation which is really useful thank you.On the 14th of April i work and as i have joined late i didnt realise or i would have booked the day off and would have come. But i would be very grateful if u could recommend any flats with two bedrooms near Hp where would be the best location to look. Will you be meeting again to look at houses.

Hi Jott,

I will organise another day no worries. Could you propose another date when you are free and we'll see who can make it. I'll look out for some flats for you but they generally arent close to HP. The flats are usually closer to town where space for building was an issue. Did you specifically want a flat? or would a nice house be ok? There are plenty of houses around so it just a case of googling to find some agents. And of course I'll do whatever I can to help.
